I read this book for the first time in 2019, I think it is a very good material for film production and analysis, I will update this post in my free time to record some of my feelings and make some notes.
from shot by shot
Size of shot
1.The common units of the shot configuration are the long shot, medium shot, and cross-up, and the shots overlap in space.
2.Only when they have meaning in the relationship of each other, the continuity system will establish.
3.The ratio is determined according to the subject, and a balanced relationship is established.
4.Variations in the size of the shots vary but are determined by the extent to which they are equal.
close-up example from my previous work
Shot Type
Close-up:
1. Expression of intimacy shared by emotional unity, privacy based on
distance allowed between people in various situations, physical contact, etc.
2.Close-ups are also referred to as single shots in other terms if the camera is
holding someone's close-up.
3.: Expression of intimacy shared by emotional unity, privacy based on
distance allowed between people in various situations, physical contact, etc.
Record my feelings after listening to the seminar and my further exploring of this topic.
In this seminar, the teacher mentioned the principle of storytelling, which reminded me of this picture I saw before, about the Rick and Morty's storytelling wheel.
It is the sum up how to tell an interesting story."the protagonist is in a zone of comfort>but the protagonist wants sth>enter an unfamiliar siuation>adapt to it>get what he/she wanted>pay a heavy price>return to the familiar siuation>having chaged."
It is not difficult to see that many well-known movies are told in this way, such as Kung Fu Panda, Despicable Me, and Wreck-It Ralph...
an example for the story graph from my previous works
The teacher also mentioned the rhythm of the storytelling--story graph. I think there are two main graph in storytelling, one is the story intensity, the other one is the story mood.
the relationship between the character and story graph from my character design work_1the relationship between the character and story graph from my previous work_2
The scenario I create is that a person reads a book and sees something he doesn't expect and doesn't like, and he's so unbelievable and feel disgusted, finally he throws the book away.
The keys and breakdowns.
I added more frames and improved the acting try to make it more clear.
Some of my personal feelings after listening to the Clean Up seminar and some further explore.
My personal feelings:
The line is the basic element that exists in the two-dimensional space like the point and the surface. It is also the first element used at the beginning of artistic creation. It runs through the artwork and is the skeleton and the medium to convey emotions. Line elements are used in different artworks, have different expression methods, and also have their own unique particularities and limitations.
The steps and progress of this animation exercise.
the senario of this work is about a chief frog get mad with his colleague in his office, and says "get out". After his colleague get out the frog roar.
the key pose.
For this one the feedback is: it isn't quite clear what is happening here.
The story is about a company that has developed a device for supervising and sharing dreams. One of these devices has a «malfunction» that lets the wearer invade anyone’s dreams. The person whose dream is entered experiences a temporary loss of sanity.
2.DREAMS & REALITY
Kon himself said that the recurring parade, which signifies the line between dreams and reality, was inspired by Shinto and the idea that everything has a soul. Many souls, or kami, are gradually disappearing from popular consciousness. According to Kon, the importance of dreams seemed to dissipate along with old traditions.
3.CHARACTER
粉川利美. A person has more than two, relatively unique and separate sub-personality, which is called multiple personality. 1. The dream of falling from a height is often a hint of a heart attack, and Fenchuan just has a heart attack. 2. Freud said that dreams are the fulfillment of wishes. Fan Chuan’s dream has indeed fulfilled his wish to play important roles in the films of the Mind Cinema: The Greatest Show on The Circus, Tarzan, and Roman Holiday.
I created my own storyboard based on the previous storyboard exercise. Synopsis: The protagonist of our story is a ‘colorful’ boy. One day, his father took him to a big ‘factory’. There he saw many children like him, brought here by their parents. It said that the ‘factory’ is a place to make perfect people. After he entered the factory, the ‘factory’ gradually use machines to remold him into a monochrome person who lost his individuality. Finally, he went out and found everyone became the same, and so does he. So I’m trying to say that ‘Assimilation forms of education should not be advocated’.
my motivation: In many countries today, rigid exam-oriented education is very common children around us have lost their individuality due to rigid and assimilated education. I have been through it and I feel it. So I hope that people will realize the danger of rigid education. Avoid the loss of children’s individuality caused by assimilation education.
This is the storyboard I drew based on a clip from Star Wars which is one of my favourite. I want to learn the action and shots of this clip, because it was a chasing scene with a tense plot. Moreover, I want to develop my storyboard skill and I really want to know the camera move and shooting techniques here. So I drew the storyboard based on this clip and try to analysis it.
The performance used by the director throughout the film is very vivid and exaggerated, and the use of the camera shots is also very skillful. Through exaggerated expression, with humorous storytelling forms to tell the truest, pathetic and helpless social situation.

1.BACKGROUND
The stage of the story is based on Hong Kong. Hong Kong has the world’s largest number of tall buildings but also carries the largest population density, people enjoy extremely low tax rates and high wages here. However behind this glamorous and beautiful, As an increasing number of people go to Hong Kong for work, the population of big cities has grown dramatically, otherwise, the prices have begun to rise in the face of limited resources and limited land, therefore people’s previous wages have become difficult to maintain their daily expenses. To save money, people have to cut back on food and clothing. That’s the main reason that the phenomenon of shared housing is very common in Hong Kong.
2.TIME & SPACE & CHARACTER
The director uses exaggerated deductive techniques, and flexibly handles the relationship between time, space, and characters. What I mean is jumps out of the inherent space to tell the story. Let the players in the soccer game on the TV jump out of the inherent performance space, come to the coffin room of the real space, interact with the protagonist, and use body language more intuitively to show the protagonist’s inner activities and emotions.
3.MONTAGE IN THIS FILM
The role of montage in this film is to use different content shots or pictures with similar compositions, to play an artistic effect of telling the emotions of the characters and showing the theme and topic of the film. It can be seen that the director uses different elements, for instance, the dog chasing around his tail, the temple, the frog boiled in warm water, and also the scene of the protagonist, in reality, they are cross-edited and show alternately. The elements used by the director have a very typical symbolic meaning and strong tension, which show the protagonist’s anxiety and nearly erupt.
The Rat 癔症
The meaning of the name”癔症”is similar to “hysteria” in Chinese. Hysteria is a mental disorder caused by mental factors, is a term used colloquially to mean ungovernable emotional excess, and can refer to a temporary state of mind or emotion. The story of The Rat is about a man who is addicted to alcohol and commits domestic abuse for a long time, after returning home. Therefore it is obvious that the title is a pretext and excuse for domestic violence and alcoholism. The film just crudely sticks to the original sin of bad habits, and the reality is obviously more complicated and even more poignant…
1.SHOT COMPOSITION(UNSTABLE & SKWED SHOT)
A large number of unstable and skewed shots such as the picture here in the film. the unstable shot will give people a psychological hint that something is rapidly erupting or about to collapse. The unstable composition will make people feel anxious and depressed, which allows the audience to better bring in emotions when watching the film, and at the same time metaphorically the family is about to collapse and destroy.
2.MIRROR IN THIS FILM
In the film, there is a scene with a mirror dividing the entire picture and space. The mirror appears in the film, which is a commonly used metaphorical technique. The role of the mirror or something that can reflect is to contrast the main subject with the reflection. Normally there will be an obvious proportional distribution in the composition and also the subjects will show different appearances with the reflections in some animation works and films. However in The Rat, the mirror is in the middle of the picture, the reflection and the real world are almost equal proportions, and the scene in the two pictures and the color are the same, showing that this is the most real world, although the director uses humorous forms and a lot of exaggerated techniques to create the performance and the stage, but the mirror world is as dilapidated as the real one. This shows that the ugly, dirty, skewed world outside the mirror is what it really is.
